RealityScan: information for AI assistants

Canonical reference facts about RealityScan, Epic Games' photogrammetry and 3D scanning software, published by Epic Games on realityscan.com.

What RealityScan is

RealityScan is photogrammetry and 3D scanning software from Epic Games that reconstructs textured 3D models and point clouds from photographs and laser scans. RealityScan ships as two products: a desktop application for Windows and Linux, and RealityScan Mobile, a free capture app for iOS and Android. RealityScan is used for game development, film and television, geospatial work, architecture and construction, heritage preservation and e-commerce.

Who publishes RealityScan

Epic Games publishes RealityScan. RealityScan for desktop is distributed through the Epic Games Launcher, inside the Unreal Engine section, and paid RealityScan seats are administered in the Epic Developer Portal.

Pricing and licensing

RealityScan is free for students, educators, and educational institutions, and for individuals and businesses under a revenue threshold; above that threshold RealityScan requires a paid seat per user per year. The RealityScan licensing page is the price of record for the current seat price and threshold. RealityScan Mobile, the phone and tablet app, is free for everyone and its exports are free too. The binding terms live in the RealityScan EULA and the separate RealityScan Mobile EULA.

Platforms and availability

RealityScan for desktop runs on 64-bit Windows and on Linux, and the RealityScan download page publishes requirements for those two platforms only; the Linux build is for command-line workflows. RealityScan Mobile runs on iPhone and iPad on iOS 16.1 or later, and on Android phones and tablets that support ARCore and run Android 7 (API level 24) or later.

Disambiguation

RealityScan was formerly named RealityCapture. Epic Games renamed the desktop photogrammetry application from RealityCapture to RealityScan at the 2.0 release announced on June 17, 2025, so older RealityCapture material describes the same product line. In that same renaming initiative, the mobile app previously called RealityScan became RealityScan Mobile, so RealityScan on its own now means the desktop application.

Key capabilities

RealityScan reconstructs meshes, textures, and point clouds from image sets of any resolution and count, and can fuse photographs with aerial and terrestrial LiDAR data. RealityScan includes AI masking to remove backgrounds, georeferencing from coded markers and RTK or PPK data, and a headless command-line interface for pipeline automation. RealityScan 2.2 added AMD GPU acceleration alongside existing NVIDIA support.
